RACE RECAP
A brisk January morning greeted the 45 competitors at the inaugural Cobble Mountain Snowshoe Classic at Gunstock Mountain Resort on Saturday, January 26, 2008. The course was a mix of groomed nordic, singletrack, and virgin trails. Dave Dunham's (Bradford, MA) winning time of 27:46 set the first course record. Rounding out the top three were acidotic RACING's Geoff Cunningham (Meredith, NH) and EORC's Jay Kolodzinski (Florence, MA). On the women's side, Sheila Osgood (Agawam, MA) of EORC won the female title in 36:05 with acidotic RACING's Andrea McCusker (Dover, NH) and Amy Tkaczyk (Northwood, NH) finishing 2nd and 3rd. Our Master's Male & Female winners were Peter Malinowski (Beverly, MA) and Diane Gagnon (Old Orchard Beach, ME). The team title was won by WMAC followed by EORC and acidotic RACING.
UPDATED: SNOWSHOE DEMOS AND RENTALS AVAILABLE
Don't own snowshoes, but would like to give snowshoe racing a try? Thanks to Red Feather and the Gunstock Nordic Center, there will be snowshoe demos to try out and rentals to race with! If you need to rent snowshoes, they are available at the Gunstock Nordic Center. Just see them in the morning after you register. You'll receive a $10 OFF coupon in your schwag bag to offset the very reasonable fee. Red Feather will also be there for you to check out all the new shoes on the market...just stay close, they're not to be used in the race!
The course is a rolling 5 km on a combination of beautifully groomed nordic trails and challenging bushwhacked singletrack. Prizes and awards along with refreshments. This is the race that will change the way you think about snowshoe racing! Don't want to race? Walkers are always welcome!
Rules: minimum snowshoe size 120 square inches
UPDATE (01/06/2008)
The course is set! Spent a little under two hours this AM setting the course. The temps were in the 30's and the snow was perfect. The START/FINISH area will be located just adjacent to the new GNA outbuilding. Thanks to Andy Howe of the GNA, the building will be open that morning with a fire already blazing in the woodstove!
UPDATE (12/31/2007)
Mother Nature has been very, very kind so far this winter. A record December snowfall here in NH has set up some of the best snowshoeing in recent memory. We received over 8 inches of powder overnight and the forecast is for another 6 inches of snow on New Years Day! We did a preliminary walk of the Cobble Mnt. course last week and have a couple of small changes to make before the 5 km loop is finalized. The groomed nordic trails are awesome. Expect the first 2 km to be mostly uphill before a brief kilometer "rest" prior to the climb up and over Cobble Mnt. on the designated snowshoe trail. The Cobble Mnt. climb will be very tough. The singletrack will be tramped out, but the roughly 3/4 km climb will challenge even the fittest snowshoers. -Chris
