RACE UPDATE (01/28/2009):
With close to 1.5 feet of snow expect at Gunstock Mountain Resort today, conditions for Saturday's race should be perfect. The new singletrack sections will be reset and marked tomorrow, but racers should expect the rail to be soft and slow. While it may not make a difference on the one BIG climb (ie. Cobble Mountain), it may thankfully slow the backcountry rollercoaster descents just a bit. The forecast is for mostly sunny skies with temps in the upper 20's and a very light wind. Just last week we added more prizes to our Redhook awards ceremony so plan to stick around. And, if you raced our Pooh Hill Snowshoe Scramble a few weeks ago ask when you register how you can earn an additional chance at the Kahtoola snowshoes we're giving away. Finally, we're going to try something a little different at the awards ceremony...forgive us for making such a big deal out of it!
A special message from the Race Director, Chris J. Dunn;
"There's been a great deal of discussion about snowshoe racing entry fees in general, and our races in particular. We do our very best to provide a great racing experience for all of our competitors. To do this, we try to find incredible venues to race and give away a ton of prizes. Our two resort venues, King Pine & Gunstock Mountain charge a "trail pass" fee per competitor for us to use the facility. This fee is paid, in part, by your entry fee. In addition, 10% of our gross revenue is given to our event non-profit. In order to retain a small profit margin we have chosen to charge our competitors $20 ($25 day of event). Once you race us I think you'll see that we provide the best value around."
All pre-registered competitors will receive special *BONUS* race updates via e-mail with exclusive inside information including course maps. This information will only be released to pre-registered racers. In addition, all pre-registered competitors will be eligible to receive *SPECIAL* prizes that will be presented at registration!
The slightly re-designed course is expected to be a rolling 5-10 km on a combination of beautifully groomed nordic trails and challenging singletrack...with one BIG climb. The exact distance to be determined shortly. Prizes and awards along with refreshments. This is the race that will change the way you think about snowshoe racing! And thanks to our friends at Kahtoola, one lucky snowshoer will go home with a brand new pair of Kahtoola FLIGHTdeck TS snowshoes!
