RACE RECAP
When we first bounced around the idea of racing at night some within the organization asked...why? The only answer at the time was...why not? We never imagined that such a novel concept would create the interest that it did. In a record setting turnout, 88 competitors lined up in the woods in the dark for the greatest snowshoe adventure many of them had ever experienced. When it was all said and done, acidotic RACING's Geoff Cunningham (Meredith, NH) won the race and set the course record with a time of 23:45. Josh Merlis (Albany, NY) of the Albany Running Exchange and EORC's Jay Kolodzinski (Florence, MA) rounded out the top 3. For the women, Sarah Thomson's (Salem, MA) 28:31 was good enough for the win and the course record. She was followed by Leslie Dillon (Dover, NH) and the Albany Running Exchange's Jessica Hageman (Schenectady, NY). Scott Graham (Westford, MA) and Louisse Brassard (Strafford, NH) won the men's and women's Masters titles. The night's team event was captured by acidotic RACING. All three of their athletes, Cunningham, Ri Fahnestock (4th) and Steve McCusker (18th) finished in the top 20. The Albany Running Exchange outscored the Rochester Runners Club to place 2nd in the team standings. The real winners, however, were all 88 competitors who were treated to a record setting night with free pizza and prizes to top it off!
*UPDATE*
February 21, 2008 - I actually ran the course in snowshoes this evening with a couple of teammates and the rail is hard and fast! Although the 4-6 inches of snow that's forecasted for Friday night into Saturday morning may slow things down considerably. Couple of reminders...1.) put a fresh set of batteries in your headlamp Saturday morning, 2.) use CAUTION on the switchback descent off of Hicks Hill, and 3.) plan to carry fluids if you're going to be on course for more than 45 minutes...there are no aid stations. Lastly, please make every effort to carpool with friends as our parking options are sufficient, but not limitless. We're expecting a RECORD turnout and need your help to assure we've got enough parking spots!
All pre-registered competitors will receive special *BONUS* race updates via e-mail with exclusive inside information including course maps. This information will only be released to pre-registered racers. In addition, all pre-registered competitors will be eligible to receive *SPECIAL* prizes that will be presented at registration!
The FREE T-shirts are GONE...but they will be on sale at the event!
A quick word about our t-shirts. In an effort to keep our costs under control and offer an entire race series we have made the decision to print only a limited number of t-shirts. If we can consistently get a great turnout at each of our events this first year we'd be happy to provide FREE t-shirts to everyone in 2009! Thank you for understanding!
This is a NIGHT race! Working headlamps are mandatory. No headlamp...no race. The gently rolling 5 km course will be illuminated by glowsticks. The trails at UNH's Kingman Farm are the perfect site for a snowshoe race. Expect the switchback up Hick's Hill to determine the winner. A very limited number of Petzel headlamps will be available to rent. A cash collateral of $20 and your driver's license are needed to check out these fabulous headlamps.
Don't want to race? Walkers are always welcome!
* Valid and current University of New Hampshire student ID must be shown.
Rules: minimum snowshoe size 120 square inches; you must show a working headlamp at registration and wear it at all times while on course
